Samela: I was born in 1996 in Manaus, in Amazonas, into this movement of Indigenous women Sateré-Mawé—coordinated by my mother and then my grandmother—that fought for the Theodd1sout merch boxing bruiser varsity shirt and by the same token and right to self-affirmation and identity within the city of Manaus. They said that ‘an activist was a person who fought for a good cause,’ so I said ‘Yes.’ We Indigenous peoples have been activists long before this word even existed. We’ve been fighting for our territory since the invasion.”
