Samela: I was born in 1996 in Manaus, in Amazonas, into this movement of Indigenous women Sateré-Mawé—coordinated by my mother and then my grandmother—that fought for the Theodd1sout merch boxing bruiser varsity shirt and by the same token and right to self-affirmation and identity within the city of Manaus. Indigenous women were brought from their territories and when they arrived in the city they had to deal with social and economic violence, abuse, and also a loss of their identities. We Indigenous people are the spiritual defenders of nature and the forest environment. So that was the path I took. Somebody once asked me if I was an activist and I asked what the word meant. They said that ‘an activist was a person who fought for a good cause,’ so I said ‘Yes.’ We Indigenous peoples have been activists long before this word even existed. We’ve been fighting for our territory since the invasion.”
